Today, after over three decades
of existence, Arrowhead Stadium remains one of the finest stadiums
in the NFL. After spending several years playing at an aging
Municipal Stadium it was time for a new stadium for both the
Chiefs and the Kansas City Royals (MLB). Originally, in the
mid 1960’s officials planned on building a single, multipurpose
stadium. However the idea was scrapped. Kansas City officials
then decided to build two stadiums, one for the Royals and one
for the Chiefs. This idea also called for the world's first
rolling stadium roof. In 1967 voters approved a plan to build
two stadiums. Construction on the stadiums began soon after.
However, the rolling roof for the stadiums was scrapped because
of project delays. After more
than three years of construction, the stadium was completed
in time for the start of the 1972 season. The facility was
named Arrowhead Stadium. The Kansas City Chiefs played their
first game at Arrowhead Stadium on August 12, 1972 against
the St. Louis Cardinals. When the stadium opened it was way
ahead of its time.
In other cities across the country, multipurpose
facilities were being constructed. Over 70,000 red and gold
seats in three tiers, enclosed the entire Astroturf playing
surface in 1972. Since its opening, Arrowhead Stadium has
underwent numerous improvements. In 1984, officials discussed
adding a dome to Arrowhead Stadium. However, the idea was
scrapped because of project costs. In 1991 a JumboTron was
added above the upper deck rim past the south endzone. In
1994, the Astroturf was removed and replaced with grass, giving
Arrowhead Stadium its modern day look. Arrowhead Stadium has
several amenities, including the Arrowhead Club, over 10,000
club seats, and 80 luxury suites. Arrowhead Stadium continues
to sell out every game, and is one of the NFL’s loudest
stadiums. Currently, the Chiefs are trying to lobby to get
funds approved for numerous upgrades at Arrowhead Stadium.
